When it comes to keeping your carpet clean or taking care of every day stains, there are several things you should keep in mind. After all, if you use the wrong products or if you use them in the wrong way, it is possible for you to further damage your carpet rather than getting it clean.
By following these 5 carpet cleaning tips, however, you will be able to enjoy a clean and lovely carpet for many years to come.
Tip #1: Find a Test Spot
Since all carpets are different, you should find a test area where you can try out a new product before you use it. Find section of carpet that no one is going to see, such as beneath a piece of furniture, and try the product out there before you go to work on the stain. Some carpets are very sensitive to carpet cleaners and the color may fade when you apply the cleaner – you certainly don’t want that to happen in a spot that is right in the middle of your living room where everyone can see.
Tip #2: Avoid Harsh Cleaners Unless Necessary
It is always best to start of with the mildest carpet cleaner you have before you move onto harsher chemicals. In fact, it is best to avoid using harsh cleaning agents unless it is absolutely necessary to get the stain out.
Tip #3: Don’t Brush or Dig Into the Carpet
Brushing or digging into the spot will only serve to set the stain deeper. The best way to clean a spot is to scrape it all toward the middle and then tamp the spot with a white cloth or towel. There are special tamping devices made for this purpose, but you can simply use a meat tenderizer to gently tamp the area and soak up the stain.
Tip #4: Don’t Use Too Much Water
The cleaning product you use may require you to add a little additional moisture in order to complete the job. Don’t go overboard with the amount o water you use, as these detergents are made to work effectively with only a little bit of wetting. Furthermore, wetting the carpeting too much can cause it to shrink or weaken the adhesive.
Tip #5: Don’t Coat a Spot
If you are unable to remove a spot, avoid applying a carpet protector until the spot has been successfully removed. If you apply a carpet protector before it is removed, it will become even more difficult to remove.
